VOLUNTEERING FOR CASA.
Volunteers are the heart and muscle of CASA! VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR. This year CASA of Northeast Tennessee has established the annual David G. Logan Volunteer of the Year Award in honor of one very special advocate. He recently lost his battle with lympoma and was still committed to seeing that children were in safe permanent homes as quickly as possible.
This year it is CASA of Northeast Tennessee's great pleasure to award the David G. Logan Volunteer of the Year Award to it's first recipient, Daniel H. Rowland. Dan has advocated for numerous children in all three counties and four courts that this organization serves. He has contributed to our organization in many different aspects; from voluntarily covering for staff on maternity leave to authoring a children's coloring book for volunteers to give out to the children involved in a case called CASA Speaks Up for Polly. Dan has been a tremendous asset to CASA and the children he has served. Thank you for all of your hard work!
VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH. David and Cynthia Frazier have been with CASA of Northeast Tennessee for a little under and a little over two years respectively. In that time they have advocated for at least 16 children and mentored many new CASA advocates. They are a dynamic duo to say the least, and they combine the hilarity of everyday life with the heart and soul required to advocate effectively for many children continuously. David and Cindy exude so many wonderful gifts that all go into the perfect recipe for a CASA advocate, they are a treasure to be around. So thank you David and Cindy for all your hard work in finding many children safe, permanent homes.
BEING A VOLUNTEER. There are two ways you can volunteer: Be an Advocate, or work in other productive ways to support the program. THE VOLUNTEER ADVOCATE. Why Volunteer? Having a CASA Volunteer means that an abused or neglected child under Juvenile Court jurisdiction has someone committed and concerned to monitor their treatment and advocate for their best interest. Imagine how important that is to a child who loses their parents because they can't or won't take care of them. Into their disrupted life come a group of strangers: police, foster parents, social workers, judges, lawyers and more. Most are concerned, but all have lots of cases to work and many claimants for their time. The CASA is there with a single purpose to insure the child's needs are met by the myriad agencies involved that the child doesn't get lost in the overburdened legal and social services system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home. The Volunteer Advocate is there until the case is closed acting and speaking on behalf of the child's well being, ensuring the court has the facts of the child's situation and best interests as crucial judgments are considered and made. The presence and efforts of Volunteer Advocates is making a critical difference this can be the difference between despondency or trust, between faltering care or a safe and stable home, between dropping out or completing school, and between delinquency or responsible behavior. Who Can Volunteer? We need committed, mature and caring adults. Advocates must be 21 years of age, meet background-screening requirements, and complete CASA training (about 30 hours). Take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions for more infomration. If you are interested in becoming an advocate, you can do so by contacting us. You may also download a Volunteer Job Description or a Volunteer Advocate Application. OTHER IMPORTANT VOLUNTEER OPTIONS. Work in other areas of the program such as fund-raising projects, fostering community awareness, assisting in the CASA office, and using technical and creative talents to produce mailings, newsletters, and to maintain web sites. We have room and work for all who are interested. Please contact us. |
